The Gift of Indulgences During the Year of Faith

THE GIFT OF INDULGENCES DURING THE YEAR OF FAITH
ACCORDING TO THE SEPTEMBER 14, 2012,
DECREE OF THE APOSTOLIC PENITENTIARY,
WITH SPECIAL PROVISIONS ESTABLISHED
FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF PHILADELPHIA
BY ARCHBISHOP CHARLES J. CHAPUT, O.F.M. CAP.

October 11, 2012 through November 24, 2013 An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. Indulgences may be applied to the living or the dead (CCC no. 1471).

The Apostolic Penitentiary with its decree on September 14, 2012, identified the many opportunities for the gift of indulgences during the Year of Faith. To obtain the Plenary Indulgence, a person must be truly repentant, receive the Sacrament of Penance and Holy Communion, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.  The following are opportunities for the Plenary Indulgence as identified by the Apostolic Penitentiary, as well as additions (in italics) established by Archbishop Chaput for the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia:

A. Every time they take part in at least three homilies preached or attend at least three lectures on the Proceedings of the Second Vatican Council and on the Articles of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  This also includes any archdiocesan or parish program providing reflections on the Second Vatican Council and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

B. Every time they go as pilgrims to sacred places identified by the Archbishop and take part there in some sacred function or at least pause in recollection for a suitable length of time with devout meditation, concluding with the recitation of the Our Father, the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form, invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary or to the Holy Apostles or Patrons.
The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul,
The Byzantine Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral
of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
The Saint Katharine Drexel Mission Center and National Shrine,
The Miraculous Medal Shrine,
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa,
The National Shrine of Saint John Neumann,
The National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia,
and Saint Rocco Parish, Avondale, as well as Saint Cyprian Parish, Philadelphia,
are the local sacred places designated by Archbishop Chaput.

C. Every time when, on the Solemnities

of Mary, the Holy Mother of God,
of the Epiphany of the Lord,
of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
of the Annunciation of the Lord,
of the Most Holy Trinity,
of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ,
of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist,
of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles,
of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,
of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
of All Saints, of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe,
of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
of the Nativity of  the Lord;
and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, as well as the Memorial of Saint Martin de Porres,
in any sacred place, they take part in a solemn Eucharistic celebration or in the Liturgy of the Hours or the celebration of the Annual Eucharistic Devotion (The Forty Hours), adding the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form.

D. On a day freely chosen during the Year of Faith on which to make a devout visit to the baptistery or other place in which they received the sacrament of Baptism, if they renew their baptismal promises in any legitimate form.

All who are unable to participate in public and solemn events for the Year of Faith because of sickness, age, monastic enclosure, or imprisonment, gain the Plenary Indulgences as listed above if they are united in mind and spirit with those actually present.  In addition, those unable to participate in such public and solemn events must also be truly repentant, fulfill the usual conditions,  recite the Our Father, the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form and other prayers associated with the Year of Faith, as well as offering up their sufferings and hardships on the occasion of the indulgence.
